On my homepage, I use a very nifty gadget called Google Trends.  It will plot on a line graph (don't you love line graphs?) the volume of people searching via Google.com for any words you enter. If we assume Google is the most widely-used search engine, then it is a of barometer on the collective curiosity of Internet users.

Notice where my mouse is.  The blue line (searches for "Jesus") as we approach Dec. 25 is basically a flat line.  The trend for "gift" and "Santa" is more what you would expect.
Next we see the subordinate data (this time in a lovely bar chart) segmented by top countries.  Again, "Jesus" is the blue line, "gift" is red and "Santa" is orange:
